Manny Gonzales III was born and raised in Albuquerque’s south valley in a close-knit, working-class family. His father was a heavy equipment operator and landfill manager for the City of Albuquerque and later opened a small family business.  His mother worked in healthcare and did a lot of volunteer work with youth.  Along with his three siblings, Manny learned the values of faith, family, and service to others which continue to guide him today.

Manny has devoted his adult life to the service of country and community. Fresh out of Rio Grande High School, he joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17. Manny continued that service after returning home by becoming a law enforcement officer with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. Along the way, he earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor’s Degree in Management.

With nearly 28 years of law enforcement experience under his belt, Manny has served in all divisions and commands within the Sheriff’s Office working his way up through the ranks. His hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, and in 2009 the Bernalillo County Commission unanimously appointed him to run the department when the then-Sheriff resigned. He later ran for Sheriff and won in 2015 and was re-elected again in 2019. Under Sheriff Gonzales’ leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has become a model law enforcement agency. It is a well-staffed department that focuses on reducing crime and keeping our community safe. Manny’s proven track record as Sheriff and in law enforcement has helped him restore and maintain public trust, strengthen community relations, and provide fair and impartial service to the people of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.  Accountability and collaboration have made the Sheriff’s Office one of the most respected agencies in our region, and Manny intends to carry these principles into City government as Mayor.

As life-long residents of Albuquerque, Manny and his wife Elaine, have chosen to raise their three children in Albuquerque. Manny is running for Mayor to restore the misplaced priorities which have been overlooked by the current administration and have allowed the people of Albuquerque to be continually victimized by the horrendous crime crisis, lack of well-paying jobs, and declining quality of life.

It is the belief that Albuquerque deserves better which fuels Manny’s passion and drive to seek the job of Mayor. He has seen first-hand what the lack of direction and vision have produced right in his own community, and he knows together with those he has served for the majority of his adult professional life, that this goal can be achieved and this vision can become reality.
